Q:What is mastic?

The word mastic is a trade term usually used to refer to silicone sealant. In fact it is often referred to as silicone or sealant.

Q:Is all mastic / silicone the same?

No, there are many different types. There are high modulus silicone sealant used for interior mastic jobs, such as bathrooms. There are low modulus silicone sealant for exterior mastic applications such as windows and expansion joints. We only use the best to ensure the maximum life for the job.

Q:What are expansion joints?

These are gaps in brickwork, concrete or render, usually filled with a mastic sealant that allows movement and eliminates cracking.

Q:What colour mastic is available?

Mastic is available in almost any colour.

Q:How long can I expect mastic to last?

We use a premium quality sealant and depending on the conditions, it can last up to 20 years before requiring replacement.

Q:Limitations: What can’t mastic do?

Mastic will not secure a bath or shower tray which has movement – It is best to make this solid before sealing. Silicone is not recommended for use against painted plaster i.e. ceilings as it will pull the paint from the plaster. Mastic will not bond with surfaces which are in any way damp. In a domestic bathroom we recommend you dry your bath or shower the night before.

Q:Why is the mastic in my shower discoloured and going black?

This is due to humidity caused by poor ventilation. Also cheap, poorly applied mastic is liable to go mouldy much faster than a professional mastic application. It is best to use premium quality silicone, properly tooled in.

Q:What can be done about discoloured mastic?

Once mastic has perished, i.e. gone mouldy, become unstuck etc, it will begin to leak and needs to be cut out and replaced.

Q:What area do you cover?

At Kent Mastic Man, we cover Kent, London, Surrey, Essex and Sussex, and further a field for larger jobs.

Q:How much do you charge?

We supply and fit mastic at very reasonable prices. We try to book jobs in with others in the same area to keep prices down.

Q:Do you do commercial work and domestic?

Yes, we have several extra tried and trusted mastic applicators who can help on larger contracts, and we are always happy to price small domestic jobs. No mastic job is too big or small.
